The Deep2 Galaxy Redshift Survey: Evolution of Close Galaxy Pairs and Major-merger Rates Up
We derive the close, kinematic pair fraction and merger rate up to redshift z ∼ 1.2 from the initial data of the DEEP2 Redshift Survey. Assuming mild luminosity evolution, the number of companions per luminous galaxy is found to evolve as (1+z), with m = 0.51±0.28; assuming no evolution, m = 1.60±0.29. Our results imply that only 9% of present-day L∗ galaxies have undergone major mergers since ...
متن کاملMinor Galaxy Interactions : Star Formation Rates and Galaxy Properties
We study star formation in a sample of 1204 galaxies in minor (|∆mz| ≥ 2) pairs and compact groups, drawn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 5 (SDSS DR5). We analyze an analogous sample of 2409 galaxies in major (|∆mz| < 2) pairs and compact groups to ensure that our selection reproduces previous results, and we use a “field” sample of 65,570 galaxies for comparison. Our major and m...
متن کاملDiscovery of a Galaxy Responsible for a DLA System atz = 3 : 15 and a Near -
We report the detection, both in line and continuum emission, of a galaxy responsible for a damped Ly absorption (DLA) system at z = 3:15 projected 2:3 00 from QSO 2233+131. The star formation rate implied by both the Ly and restframe far-UV continuum is 7 M yr ?1. The galaxy also shows no sign of an active nucleus and has blue colors, both consistent with it being observed early in its star fo...
متن کامل2MASS/SDSS Close Major-Merger Galaxy Pairs: Luminosity Functions and Merger Mass Dependence
We select a close “major-merger candidate” galaxy pair sample in order to calculate the Ks luminosity function (LF) and pair fraction representative of the merger/interaction component of galaxy evolution in the local universe. The pair sample (projected separation 5 h kpc ≤ r ≤ 20 h kpc, Ks-band magnitude difference ∆Ks ≤ 1 mag) is selected by combining the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) wi...
متن کاملFormation of a Spiral Galaxy in a Major Merger
We use numerical simulations to examine the structure of merger remnants resulting from collisions of gas-rich spiral galaxies. When the gas fraction of the progenitors is small, the remnants structurally and kinematically resemble elliptical galaxies, in agreement with earlier work. However, if the progenitor disks are gas-dominated, new types of outcomes are possible. In fact, we show that a ...
